McDonaldization refers to the process of how the principles of the fast food industry are rapidly dominating the rest of society. Many stores are now open 24 hours a day in order to stay competitive. This book draws attention to very important aspects of the way in which our society is becoming globalized, streamlined, and homogenized. After all, we do not need a less rational society rather what we want is more control on the process of rationalization to remove more of its irrational consequences. In this traditional model, high costs have to be incurred so that the business operates more efficiently. What is being seen as a development is that the human skills and capabilities are being rapidly eroded in the fact of development and the humans are merely being used in order to facilitate the processes of the machinery.
Control Through the Substitution of Nonhuman for Human Technology Ritzer's discussion combines these last two elements of the McDonaldization process. Specifically, replacement of human by nonhuman technology is often oriented towards greater control. In this lesson, we discuss his concept of McDonaldization and the four main characteristics of McDonaldization that he describes. The curtain was rung down on that phase of history, at least, by the sudden invention of the hydrogen bomb, of the ballistic missile and of rockets that can be aimed to hit the moon. Another example is speed dating, which allows individuals to gather for a production-line style of short face-to-face meetings with each other, simplifying and speeding up the normally time-consuming process of meeting a variety of people. It is worth considering whether the shared joy that food can provide is worth giving up.
Maybe that's why it was very hard to me to comprehend! Two of their most appealing qualities are convenience and affordability. Calculability, however, also leads to the quality of the food being neglected. The unfortunate truth about behaviorism and the validity of its laws is that the more people there are, the more likely they are to behave and the less likely they are to tolerate non-behavior. This made them, among other things, great brewers of beer. The less one works, the less one gains. Apart from this McDonaldization theory has been criticized for applying very little of the critical theory and providing no recommendations for what can be done to stop McDonaldization of society.
Los Angeles: Pine Forge Press. Predictability Predictability refers to the attempt to structure our environment so that surprise and differentness do not encroach upon our sensibilities. According to Weber, by hierarchical roles, compartmentalized knowledge and roles, a perceived merit-based system of employment and advancement, and the legal-rationality authority of the rule of law. By that I mean that they deny their basic humanity, the human resource, of the people who work within are served by them. For example, if you have to go to the emergency room of a nearby hospital, you will see a triage nurse who will assess your symptoms and treat minor conditions before you ever see a doctor.
As one might worry, with any critique of rationalisation there is a possibility of reactionarism - opposing new technological developments because they are new and disturb one's traditional beliefs about the world, etc. Where Max Weber used the model of the bureaucracy to represent the direction of this changing society, Ritzer sees the fast-food restaurant as having become a more representative contemporary paradigm. Efficiency is defined as the average value that every individual creates in a given period of time. I sometimes use radicals for a quick and dirty error estimation on a questionable statistic, especially in baseball. That said, I don't think it should be avoided by veterans of sociological theory. There are aspects of this process which are clearly interlinked with the traditional values and the claims of the author of the McDonaldization process being the cause of the modernists is undermining this important area and aspect of the McDonaldization process. So, people know what to expect when they enter the restaurant.
Along with the four concepts of rationality, McDonaldization also takes into account the irrationality of the rational systems. As our children grow up within these systems, they develop habits which insure our increasing dependency upon the systems. Figure 1 has seven dotted lines and two solid black lines, indicating nine different kinds of relations:. This has led to the inhibition of the variations in society, and made us dependent on the very things that McDonaldization creates. But he does talk about possible ways to avoid McDonaldized society if you're one of those who agree with him about its costs.
Cars, cash registers, calculators, cell phones, etc. He gives so many examples that the meaning that he is trying to convey gets lost in it i. The popularity of the restaurant is an example of McDonaldization. Anything that is automated in today's society has some type of computer. After laying out how McDonaldization works in the book, Ritzer explains that this narrow focus on rationality actually produces irrationality. Let's not forget the self-checkout some supermarkets have implemented--this is a prime example of the Mcdonaldization of Society. If the rat pulled the incorect lever, it would not get fed anything for a while.
Definitely recommend it for anyone looking to expand their their understanding on how processes in education or the work force have come to resemble those of a fast food assembly line. Taylor, and his ideas played a key role in shaping the work world throughout the twentieth century. George Ritzer 1998 explains that these principles are efficiency, uniformity, predictability, and control. The main concept of McDonaldization involves some of rationalization of certain ideas and methods to coincide with how the society evolved in general. Everything is handled and managed in a way to control the perceptions and mindset of people. The fast food industry has become increasingly uniform and automated.
Supplementary chapters serve more as padding or restatement rather than further exploration. By that, I mean that they deny the basic humanity, the human reason, of the people who work within or are served by them. Statistical uniformity is by no means a harmless scientific ideal; it is the no longer secret political ideal of a society which, entirely submerged in the routine of everyday living, is at peace with the scientific outlook inherent in its very existence 1959: 41-42; my emphasis. As shown in figure 1 below, dotted lines indicate contradictory relations and solid black lines demonstrate complementary relations. Likewise, quantity is increasingly important everywhere you go. I mean all what you see is figures, statistics and barely understandable assumptions. Efficiency refers to the most methodical means of achieving an outcome based on product and cost effectiveness.
What does George Ritzer mean by McDonaldization? Being part of a rationalization process, McDonaldization is a phenomenon through which the world markets are being rationalized and reorganized in order to maximize the capital accumulation. Though this may not prove to be harmful for the fries and the burgers, it may lead to depersonalization of the workers and customers. When faced with any situation you can divide the reactionary decision into two groups; rational or irrational, instinctual or improv, emotional or logical. I borrowed this book from the library. After all, this book is especially useful for spurring discussion of broader possibilities, solutions, and explanations for the contemporary iron cage we've locked ourselves in.
